Chapter 8: Training Adventures with Jojo and Mom

Our journey with Jojo took an exciting turn as we decided to enroll her in group training classes. The goal was not just to train Jojo, but also to help Mom bond with her and gain confidence in handling her despite her limitations. Despite the challenges posed by her stroke, Mom was determined to be actively involved in Jojo’s upbringing.

From the very first class, Jojo’s connection with Mom became evident. Although Mom couldn’t speak, her gentle touch and loving presence communicated volumes to Jojo. The trainers were incredibly understanding and supportive, ensuring that the exercises were tailored to accommodate Mom’s condition. They patiently guided her through each step, making sure she felt comfortable and capable.

Jojo, with her keen sense of empathy, quickly adapted to Mom’s needs. She seemed to understand when Mom was struggling and responded with extra gentleness. During the sessions, Jojo’s enthusiasm was contagious, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone around. She thrived in the group environment, making new friends and learning new commands, all while staying closely attuned to Mom.

One of the most heartwarming moments was watching Mom and Jojo perform a basic command together. Armed with techniques from our Dog Training Hand Signals Guide , Mom would give a simple signal for Jojo to sit, and without hesitation, she would comply. The easy-access treat dispenser made rewarding these successes simple, even on days when Mom's mobility was limited. The pride and joy on Mom's face were indescribable. It's been more than a year since we saw Mom smile this much.

Despite the hardships Mom faced, Jojo’s unwavering companionship provided her with a renewed sense of purpose. Their journey wasn’t just about training—it was about healing, connection, and finding joy in the small victories.

Stay tuned for more stories about how Jojo continues to adapt to Mom’s condition and the special moments that make our family stronger every day.
